"The honor of having President Washington host a dinner for 260 guests and hear his stories and accounts of serving as the commander-in-chief of the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War, serving as the founding father of our nation, and serving as our country’s first president of the united states is truly a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity"” says Tom Phlegar, program chairman, Mecklenburg chapter. "President Washington’s interaction with the audience and his amazing ability to recount his role in numerous historical events from a first-person point of view will delight, inform and entertain everybody in attendance."
Each year the Mecklenburg Chapter, SAR, sponsors a national historical figure to visit Charlotte as part of the chapter’s President’s Day community dinner and education series.
"This dinner and event is open to all individuals, families, organizations, groups and all ages," says Phlegar. "Last year we had Thomas Jefferson host our event and it was an enormous success. We are estimating that 260 community members will attend this year’s dinner with George Washington."
Veteran historical actor from stage, film, TV and radio, Kevin Grantz portrays President Washington. "For more than a decade, Grantz has transformed himself into George Washington, 'the man, not the myth,' offering a more intimate glimpse of our nation’s first president," adds Phlegar, "giving him the opportunity to share his deep love and respect of Colonial history and the appreciation he has for the accomplishments of George Washington."
As our first president of the United States, Washington served two terms from 1789-1797, presiding over the drafting of the U.S. Constitution while overseeing the creation of a strong, well-financed national government. "George Washington became an international icon for liberation and nationalism following the Revolutionary War," says Phlegar, "and he is consistently ranked among the top three presidents of the United States, according to polls of both scholars and the general public."
Admission to the dinner and evening program with President George Washington is $26 per person and open to all ages, individuals and organizations. You must have a paid reservation to attend.
